At Ash Green, we aim to inspire an active generation and strive to give children the tools and
understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical and mental health. We want all children to experience a variety of sports and physical skills which will lead to life-long positive choices linked to health and fitness. PE is taught to challenge and promote confidence, self-esteem and social skills which enables children to develop their ability to manage both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities. In addition to sport, the teaching of dance allows children to explore their personal and spiritual identity.
Our range of sports and skills-based PE curriculum reflects the National Curriculum and delivers a
range of physical skills which are aimed at the needs of our school community. The programme of learning is clear, sequential and structured. This has been carefully and coherently planned to meet the needs of all pupils at Ash Green from when they join us in our Just Three provision right through to when our children leave us in Year 6. The use of the GetSet4PE scheme of work for lesson plans along with the tracking and progression documents ensures that the physical skills taught are progressive throughout all the year groups.
Our PE curriculum ensures the sports and physical skills taught each year are built upon demonstrating the clear progression which is delivered within discrete units of work. Knowledge Organisers are used throughout school to support the learning enabling pupils to have a clear understanding of the key vocabulary, the key skills for each unit of work and how previous skills will be built upon and developed, demonstrating clear progression. These Knowledge Organisers are shared through digital learning platforms including EEXAT for EY and SeeSaw for KS1 and KS2 – this is to maximise home-school learning opportunities and to encourage parents and carers to play an active part in their child’s education.
We aim to provide a range of sporting experiences which many children may not receive outside of school. Each class has a range of sports and skills delivered to them by their class teacher or a sports coach. Throughout school, Dance will be delivered in every year group allowing children to express themselves and enable them to develop a sense of personal identity. We strive to bring in sports coaches to deliver sessions both within and out of school hours enabling students to partake in a wider range of activities. In North Halifax, we aim to develop an inter school competition system which allows children to develop their competitiveness and their ability to win and lose with dignity.
We recognise that the pupils need both a sense of valuing themselves, and developing aspirations for their future, therefore a primary focus of our curriculum is to raise ambitions and dreams, engender a sense of personal and collective pride in achievement, and provide a purpose and relevance for learning.
Implementation:
Please refer to the PE Policy and Scheme of Work for a comprehensive break down of how the PE Curriculum is implemented at Ash Green.
Impact:
Leaders in school, including the PE Manager regularly measure the impact of our PE curriculum through Deep Dives and the monitoring of teaching and learning, assessment and on-going self-review. We survey staff, pupils and parents, undertake learning walks, carry out both formal and informal monitoring in order to sample typicality, and scrutinise samples of photographic evidence of PE sessions both in school, as well as remotely. We have an established system of Governor review with a Standards and Effectiveness Committee who oversee our curriculum. Governors on this committee receive regular reports, and discussions are held at this committee meeting on successes and upcoming priorities. Based on monitoring and Deep Dives, clear next step priorities for PE are agreed as part of a PE action plan.
The impact will be that our pupils will be prepared for the next phase of their education, are motivated to succeed and achieve, and are equipped with all the personal skills to do this.
The PE curriculum will be rooted in excellence and enjoyment which will promote achievement, collaboration, individual and collective pride, confidence and high standards of behaviour for learning.
