At Ash Green, it is our aim that the Music curriculum will open our children’s eyes to the varied musical world in which we live and will ignite a fascination with Music that we hope will follow them throughout their lives. Through the development of a variety of skills, they will explore the interrelated dimensions of Music and develop an ability to critically engage with both what they hear and what they themselves perform.
Ash Green’s Music curriculum is a clear, sequential and structured programme of learning, which has been carefully and coherently planned, in order to meet the needs of all pupils. We have chosen to use singing as the basis for our units, as the voice is an instrument that all our children have access to and singing has been shown to have many benefits. It stimulates the brain, encourages healthy posture and provides important inclusive and collaborative opportunities for Music making. Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure appropriate coverage and progression from when our children join us in the Just Three provision, right through to when they leave us in Year 6. Content is taught in discrete units of work, whilst our staff ensure musical opportunities are available more widely across the curriculum. Musical life at Ash Green does not end there, with opportunities for whole school singing available in assemblies and additional provision through the specialist teaching of ukeleles in Year 4 and the availability of peripatetic lessons with an external provider, Rocksteady Music School. We also work hard to facilitate school participation in events in the wider area, such as competitions and choral performances and we welcome external agencies into school to augment our musical offering wherever possible.
Music is known to be important in the development of both physical and self esteem, and an important focus of our Music curriculum through its many varied listening and performance opportunities is to raise our children’s ambitions and introduce them to sounds that will encourage enquiry as well as enjoyment. Through inter-class and cross-site performances and also team-teach sessions, our curriculum inspires performance for a purpose and will bolster pupils’ self esteem and pride in their achievements.
At Ash Green we serve a community with a large percentage of disadvantaged pupils, and the wide range of Musical experiences we provide aims to develop a thirst for further musical learning, which our pupils may not otherwise enjoy.
In the future we are looking to raise the profile of Music further by using annual Knowledge Organisers that will enable us to communicate the progressive nature of the knowledge and skills that make up our curriculum in Music to all stakeholders, through their use in the classroom and also on our learning platforms (Evidence Me, Class Dojo) and school website. These platforms also provide the opportunity to share performances with families, which in turn promotes a sense of purpose in Music education.
